Comments

The Ormen Lange Development is presently the single largest project in Norway. As many as 18,000 people will be employed directly and indirectly as a result of this project. The development is situated 120 km (75 miles) off the west coast of Norway in the upper part of the Storegga area. Natural gas reserves cover a geographical area of 350 km2 (130 miles) and are located in water depths varying from 850 to 1,100 m (2,800 to 3,600 ft). The seabed is very irregular, with a soil varying from stiff rock to soft clay.

The development is divided into three phases. The well stream will be transferred via pipelines to an onshore processing plant. The processed gas will be transported through pipelines and then exported to the U.K. and the European continent. The development will operate both as a base and swing load field. Norsk Hydro is the operator for the planning and development phase. Shell will take over as operator when Ormen Lange comes onstream in October 2007. Shell will also be responsible for drilling of the production wells.

The development plan for the Ormen Lange Field offers improved economics when compared with the original concept selection. This is due to an increase in recoverable reserves, increased production level, higher processing capacity, higher transport capacity and more flexibility in the proposed concept.
